The base of this small statue is made of marble and has a metal
label showing the name of the god "Hephaestus". The height of
this miniature is 8cm.
Hephaestus was the god of fire, especially the blacksmith's
fire. He was the patron of all craftsmen, especially those
working with metals. He was worshiped predominantly in Athens,
but also in other manufacturing centers. He was the god of
volcanoes. Later, the fire within them represented the smith's
furnace. That's the reason that the artist shows "Hephaestus"
holding his hammer.
